James Frew, one of the largest privately-owned building services companies in Scotland, has reduced fuel costs by almost 30 per cent in the past 12 months following the adoption of an advanced vehicle tracking solution as part of its wider fleet improvement strategy. The company replaced an existing tracking system with the web-based Ctrack Online, incorporating a driver behaviour solution, across 110 vans operated by its team of engineers to target a range of efficiency savings and improvements in health and safety.
The tracking solution includes Ctrack’s Driver Behaviour Indicator (DBI), an in-vehicle device that alerts drivers to any infringements by displaying a series of traffic-light coloured warning lights along with audible alarms. By providing real-time driver feedback, DBI highlights a range of exceptions, such as harsh acceleration, braking and cornering along with speeding, to encourage an improved driving style behind the wheel.
Meanwhile, Ctrack Online’s Driver League Table Reporting tool enables James Frew to identify the best and worst performing parts of its fleet operation along with areas of improvement. Individual engineers are placed in the green, yellow or red band for each exception based on their driving performance, while an overall score is calculated for each to enable a simple ranking system. From this insight, the company has been able to target improvements amongst the bottom 10 per cent, with the worst offending drivers taking the Energy Saving Trust’s fuel efficient eco-driving training course
The driver behaviour programme has also helped change the mind-set of the engineers, encouraging responsible and stress-free driving that avoids aggressive vehicle handling. This has not only helped to improve the well-being of engineers, but also reduce accidents levels with no serious incidents occurring since the tracking solution was installed. As a result, James Frew expects to lower fleet insurance premiums moving forward, as well as make additional savings from reduced maintenance and tyre costs.
Sandy Clare, Financial Director of James Frew commented: “We implemented a fleet improvement strategy that targeted operational savings through enhancements to driver behaviour as well our routeing and scheduling processes. The Ctrack solution has become an essential part of this programme, helping us to reduce costs by almost 30 per cent, and we expect to make further associated fleet savings as the system becomes further embedded in our operation.”
