New mystery novel with a logistics backdrop published by Peter Rowlands

What is the world of the typical logistics journalist really like? You’ll find some striking insights in Alternative Outcome, a brand new mystery thriller that’s been published online by Peter Rowlands, long-time transport journalist and editor-turned-novelist.

Whether the main character’s world is exactly typical is perhaps another question. How many business journalists find old stories that they wrote coming back to haunt them? How many get embroiled in assaults and kidnappings? How many end up giving advice to some of the leading companies they write about?

That said, a lot of this book will be instantly familiar to anyone in the business: the reporting on trade shows, the ring-around articles, the press conferences, the site visits, the press releases. It’s all reported with the sure eye of someone who’s lived and breathed it.

But there’s more. This is a book with multiple levels. To liven up his somewhat jaded existence, Mike, the protagonist, has written his own novel, basing it on true events. He publishes it online, and this turns out to have frightening ramifications.

Perhaps rashly, he decides to track down some of the real-life characters he hijacked for his book. That leads him into an almost obsessive hunt to find a girl he knew in his teens – a pursuit that has dramatic consequences for many of those involved. But it also brings a hint of romance, adding an important strand to this complex story.

It might all sound a bit convoluted, but actually it’s written with a remarkably light touch. The characters are vibrantly three-dimensional (especially the coolly calculating parcel industry CEO); the dialogue is vivid and naturalistic; and if you’re prepared to overlook some pretty remarkable coincidences, the plot hangs together surprisingly well.

And it’s all told with great dramatic drive. From a measured start, it quickly gathers pace. The multiple plot strands gradually intertwine, and it becomes increasingly hard to separate Mike’s novel from the reality he’s experiencing.

This book may not exactly parallel the more mundane logistics world we’re familiar with, but you’ll enjoy the ride. It come with our five-star recommendation.
